From SCENE to Pride: Manchester Comes Together This August

There is something special about Manchester in August. The city feels full of energy, creativity and community, and this year that feeling will stretch across almost two weeks as SCENE Festival leads into Manchester Pride.

From 20th until 27th August, SCENE brings LGBTQ+ film and TV to venues across the city. Then, from 28 to 31 August, Manchester Pride takes over the city for a long weekend of celebration, culture and community.
Together, the two events offer a brilliant way to experience a different side of Manchester, one that is proudly local.

A week of LGBTQ+ stories at SCENE

Running from 20 to 27 August, SCENE Festival is Manchester’s LGBTQ+ Film & TV Festival, celebrating queer stories and talent through film screenings, premieres, conversations, comedy and special events.

There is a real sense of discovery to the festival, with events taking place across different venues around the city. It is a chance to see Manchester through an LGBTQ+ cultural lens, while discovering some of the people and places that make the city such an interesting place to visit.

SCENE takes place across a range of venues in the city, from established cultural spaces to much-loved local landmarks. It is a festival that makes the most of Manchester’s character, bringing queer storytelling into venues that reflect the city’s ability to blend old and new.

That sense of place is part of the appeal. Many of the spaces hosting SCENE events have a rich history of their own, given fresh energy as homes for live entertainment, culture and community right in the heart of the city.
Most venues sit close to Mamucium, making the area around the hotel a useful base for discovering SCENE, as well as the wider city.

Then comes Pride

As SCENE comes to an end on 27 August, the focus turns towards Manchester Pride, running from 28 to 31 August. This year’s theme is ‘No Place Like Home’, a fitting message for a city with such a strong LGBTQ+ identity and history.

Manchester has long been home to LGBTQ+ communities, activists, artists, performers and businesses. That history can still be felt throughout the city, from the Village and its venues to the independent businesses and creative spaces dotted across Manchester.

This year’s Pride is also fully community-led, putting the people and communities at its heart. It is an important part of what makes Pride in Manchester feel so connected to the city itself.

The celebrations are an opportunity to come together, celebrate identity and individuality, remember the work that has come before, and enjoy everything that makes Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community so vibrant.

Make a day of it

Pride and SCENE are also a great excuse to spend a little longer exploring Manchester.

Take time to wander through the Northern Quarter, discover independent shops and creative spaces, stop for a coffee, or head towards the Village to experience some of the city’s LGBTQ+ venues and nightlife.

The NOMA and Victoria area offers another perspective, with historic architecture sitting alongside contemporary restaurants, bars and cultural spaces. New Century Hall is right at the centre of this changing neighbourhood, while Mamucium offers a relaxed place to pause and refuel.

Enjoy some good food, drinks and plenty of time to catch up before heading back out into the Pride festivities. A city that feels like home

From SCENE’s celebration of LGBTQ+ storytelling to the community-led Manchester Pride weekend, late August is a chance to experience Manchester at its most creative, welcoming and connected.

The two events tell different parts of the same story: a city where LGBTQ+ culture has a place, a history and a community. And perhaps that is what makes this year’s ‘No Place Like Home’ theme so appropriate.

Manchester is a city that has always made space for people to find their own place within it. This August, SCENE and Pride invite everyone to experience that sense of belonging for themselves through the stories they watch, the places they discover, the food they share and, most importantly, the people they meet along the way.
